Starting from Scratch: What I Learned in My First Week of Blogging & Freelance Research

    Small wins add up!

This was one of my more productive weeks overall—I made real progress. After last week’s challenges with the winter storm, How I Stayed on Track With My Side Hustle Goals—Even During a Winter Storm, I was determined to get things done. But by mid-week, my energy levels took a hit. A mix of poor sleep, a work deadline, and a weekend of extra hours for my 9-5 slowed me down.

    Still, forward progress is progress.

    Moving Forward: Week 9 Targets

    1. The Blog: Write 2-3 blog entries to create a content cadence.
    2. Fiverr:
      • Research what sells & how to position my skills
      • Set up my profile
      • Create 4 gigs
      • Get necessary software subscriptions for gigs
    3. Time & Expense Tracking: I will conduct a time survey to realistically figure out how to fit side-hustle work into my schedule. If necessary, I may shift my focus more toward weekends for this work.

Here’s how the week shaped up and what’s next on my list.

When Life Throws a Curveball at Your Plan

I had a plan. Then nature had a different one.

I was excited and motivated to start executing my plan to diversify my income. But then, a massive winter storm swept through the Midwest, closing local schools for four days straight. That meant my kids were home—bored, restless, and ready for action—while I still had to work my 9-5 job. Needless to say, that threw a wrench into my week!

My Freelancing Plan for Week 8: Setting Up for Success

In my last post, Planning Success: 5 Easy Steps for Single Parents, I created a plan of attack for getting started.

My focus was on three key areas:

    1. Getting basic supplies
    2. Setting up a system to track time and expenses
    3. Starting this blog

    Let’s see how I did.

Can a Single Parent Build 7 Streams of Income?

When I first decided to take action to diversify my income, I hit a wall—action paralysis. Sound familiar? Maybe you’ve seen the same flood of advice:

    • “You need 7 income streams to achieve financial freedom.”
    • “Make $5,000 a month by doing this one thing!”
    • “Follow this plan for 30 days and change your life!”

While inspiring, it was also overwhelming. I kept asking myself, Where do I even begin?”

As a single parent with a 9-5 job, I knew I had to be realistic. But here’s the thing: I figured out a plan that works for my life—and you can too. I broke it down into 5 simple steps that any single parent can follow. If you’re ready to start building multiple income streams or tackling any other big goals, let’s dive in—step by step.

Breaking Free: Starting My Journey to Financial Independence as a Single Parent and How You Can Too

Does financial freedom feel impossible as a single parent? Here’s how you can change that.

Sometimes, YouTube videos spark motivation, while at other times they leave you thinking, “Not possible for me.”

Lately, I’ve found myself watching many videos about building multiple income streams. I keep returning to this topic every few months, and it’s finally pushed me to reevaluate my situation.

Single mother working from home while three children engage in activities like coloring and playing, representing the balance of full-time parenting and building multiple income streams for financial freedom.
Balancing work and family—navigating the journey to financial freedom as a single parent.

With the state of the economy, my full-time job, and my financial situation, I had to ask myself:

    • As a single, full-time working parent—can you really diversify your income?
    • Do you have the time (or energy) for a side hustle?
    • What happens if you do nothing?
